Sports Week

Don't forget about the Early Release on Friday!
Kendra can tie her shoe! Great job, Kendra!
Zane turned 6! Happy Birthday, Zane!
This week was sports week! Each day we got to dress like a certain team, and we also got to bring in a ball from any sport. One of the things we did with the balls was to put them in the order from smallest to biggest!

We played a sight word game with ping pong balls. I wrote a sight word on each ball and before the kids got a chance to throw it into the hat, they had to read the word. It was tough! Remmi and Courtney were the only ones that made it!

On Friday after learning all that information about sports, we played a Jeopardy game on the smart board. I split the kids in class and they had to discuss the answers in their group before they came up with their final answer! The game ended up pretty close! Before the last question, it could have been anyone's game! Some of the questions were as easy as "What sport do the Brewers play?" to "How long does a bull rider need to stay on a bull?" They didn't remember that answer- one group said 30 hours!

I also wanted to thank you for bearing with me this school year! It has been a very tough one for me. First, I lost one grandma on the first day of school, then two months later I lost my other one. Then, in November my husband found a tumor in one of his salivary glands and has to have the whole gland removed next Friday (It's in the middle of some facial nerves, so it's not an easy surgery, but so far, they are pretty sure it is benign.). And then my mom found out she has breast cancer about a month ago! I'm sure your kids came home and told you I was crying at least one day at school, and that is why! Luckily it had not spread and she had surgery last week. She is doing great and they are not even sure she needs to have chemo anymore! She will find out those results soon. I am so lucky to have such a great group of kids and families this year!

Wear Orange on Thursday!

Please wear ORANGE on THURSDAY, March 19th in honor of  Fairness (our character Trait of the Month). This is a change from the last note I sent home. Since the Badgers are playing on Friday, we thought we would wear Badger clothes on FRIDAY, March 20th.
Don't forget about the Early Release on FRIDAY!

Cat in the Hat and Petting Zoo

The Cat in the Hat came to school! We listened to the Cat in the Hat read some books and talk about Dr. Suess' life! One of the things the kids loved learning about was that after he wrote his book, he went to a publisher and got turned down, so he went to another, and another, and another, and another, and another, and another... until finally the 28th says yes! We learned that we shouldn't give up so easy!

It was FFA week, so we walked over to the high school and got to see a cow, lamb, calf, dog, and a guinea pig! The kids loved seeing them!

Spring Conferences

Starting with the Spring Conferences this year Iowa-Grant will be doing the sign-up using Google Docs. It may sound complicated, but it allows parents to make sure they are getting times that are convenient for them. It will allow you to keep your time slots close together if you have multiple kids at IGEMS. If you do not have Internet or the new technology stresses you out please just write a note to me telling the times you prefer. If you are going to write in a time please give me three different options though, incase your first choice is filled.
Remember, I will not be available for conferences on Friday morning, my husband is having surgery that day. If you need to schedule a different time with me, please let me know!
Google Docs
The Spring Conference sign-up is on the Iowa-Grant homepage and it is a shared document. A shared document means multiple people can open it and add information. The document will look like a large table. Just find the appropriate teachers and put your name in the time you'd like. Google Docs saves automatically, so when you are finished there is no save button to click.

Popcorn!

This week we learned about Popcorn! We watched a few videos on how popcorn is made from plant to popcorn, and we even watched a slow-mo one to see what happens when it explodes!
Thursday we went to Rural Route 1 and had a great time! I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did!

Maddy turned 6 last week! Happy Birthday, Maddy!
We turned our sight words into popcorn! The kids loved reading their words with a partner! They even wanted to play it during playtime!

Playtime pictures!

We did an activity where all the kids wore a sight word on their head. Then they walked around the room reading everyone's words and drawing lines from the student's name to the sight word that matched. At the end, they had to figure out what word was on their own head.

PJ Day with buddies!
