Penguins!

This week we learned about penguins! We learned that there are penguins that live in the cold and penguins that live where it is warm! When penguins are first born they do not have feathers. The kids think a newborn penguin looks kind of creepy!

They live on their parents feet for the next few weeks until they get their warm "baby feathers." Image result for baby penguin
After they are a few months old, they get adult feathers that are waterproof so they can swim in the water.
When it is really cold, penguins like to huddle together. Then when the penguins on the inside get too warm, those penguins go to the outside of the circle. We practiced this in the room.
We did an experiment to see how penguins (and other arctic animals) can swim in such cold water! We first put our bare hands in some cold water. It was cold!

Then we put on a waterproof glove to show how the special oil keeps the water off of their feathers. Finally we put some blubber (shortening) on the glove and tested the water again! It was so much warmer! Maybe if we smeared ourselves with shortening we could swim with the penguins!

We took a quick field trip to the South Pole on Tuesday. :) We got to see if we were shorter or taller than the Emperor Penguin!

We are really focusing on the teen numbers and math partners in math.

Ruby got her birthday wish and got a snow day on her birthday! We celebrated her 6th birthday on Thursday instead. Happy birthday, Ruby!

 Playtime :)
We got to sled a little this week!

In reading we are learning about the 4 seasons. We read a book called "Mama, is it summer yet?" We are OK it being winter right now since we just got this fresh snow, but soon I know we will be hoping for summer! We learned two new sight words- is and little. Our new vocabulary words are weather, seasons, migrate, active and spot.

If you have any clean gallon jugs, please send them my way!

Make up day- We will be having school on February 24th to make up an ice day. It will be Day D and we will have PE and Art.

If you ever would like to come a little early to pick up your child, you are more than welcome to stop in for playtime at 2:50 until the end of day! We love having more adults in the room to help us play Monopoly or Chutes and Ladders!  Isaiah's mom came to play with us today!

We met our goal of 10 more Panther Paws! We voted and we will have HAT DAY on Wednesday, February 1st. Each student is able to wear any kind of hat that day! (Please remind them that they cannot share their hats with anyone!)

Go, Pack, Go!

What a crazy week we had! With not having school on Monday, Tuesday and a late start Wednesday, we didn't get much done! We were able to read our big book "An Orange in January," and talked about how fruits, vegetables and milk gets from the trees/ cows, to the grocery store!
Our new sight words (yes WORDS!) were he and with.
On Friday we danced to the Packer Polka in the hall!

And made cheese heads! I even got a student that said his parents would disown him if he wore a cheese head to wear one! I told him that he could stay with me if he needed. :)

Open door Playtime!

I brought out my pencil dispenser today! (It's actually for straws, but works great for pencils!) It has been broken before, so I had a nice lesson on how to use it! Then, of course, all the kids had to try it out!

We are in need of CLEAN, DRY gallon milk jugs by the end of the month. If you have any, please send them our way!

I also just got an email for my update about the Symbaloo page. It didn't show up on the email, so I actually had to click on my blog page for it to open. Hopefully it works for you!

If you would like to order a class t-shirt for your child, please remember to send it back. If you need a new order form, please let me know.
