Apples- Week 1

This week we began learning about apples. The kids already knew a lot of facts about apples, but we learned even more by reading books and using our senses with the real thing.

Since apples aren't always just one color, we ripped up colored paper to glue to our apples and had to use 2 different colors. They will be hanging in the hall if you come to school sometime soon!

On Friday we made applesauce!
The kids got to use the awesome apple peeler to peel their apples! It peels them, cores them and slices them!

This shows that the apples are cut like a spiral or a slinky!

After filling the crockpot with apples, we also added brown sugar, water and cinnamon.

Hayden has been a huge help this week because he has been helping out at his uncle's apple orchard. He brought in several different kinds of apples for us to look at and taste. He also knows a lot of facts about apples!
Next we taste tested some of the apples.  It was fun to try ones that looked very similar in color, but ended up tasting very different! We tried 6 different apples and each one was very good, but we  all usually had a favorite.

By the end we had a PILE of peelings! The kids were just waiting to eat them! Most came back for seconds, thirds, and even fourths!

When we were finished, it was like a buffet! The kids could take pieces of different kids of apples that they wanted to try more of.

After the eating was finished, we graphed what kind of apples we liked best- red, green, or yellow. In the end, green ended up winning. The kids did a great job keeping up with our graph!

We only had one student that didn't want to try the apple sauces, but everyone that did try it loved it!

Reminders- Please remember to send a snack everyday. We always have extra apples, but some students are getting a little tired of them, especially after this week. :)
