Apple Sauce Day!

I'm going to warn you, I took a lot of pictures this week!

On Monday we started having Camp (Intervention). If your child needs a little extra help in an area, they will join a small group to work on that skill. If they do not need to work on those specific skills, they join Ms. Fenstermann in the large group and read books and sing songs.

Tuesday we did apple centers! Each teacher had a different center and the kids switched rooms. Ms. Fenstermann did apple tasting and graphing, Mrs. Mayne made apple juice, and I did the apple with the star in the middle and apple stamping.

 They gave the juice a thumbs up!

Today we made applesauce! A huge mess, but totally worth it!

Yesterday I asked the kids their recipe for making applesauce. Some had no clue what goes into it, and others were sure they knew! (Some were pretty close, but some were way off…) :) Some said to add “a spoon of black stuff”, or 4 gallons of sugar and 2 gallons of milk, or an egg, or even honey meat (but he said he didn’t even like it.) When I asked how long to cook it, Owen said “You have to cook it?” and Max thought “26 seconds.” I love this age!

In math we started working on addition and subtraction! We learned that addition means putting together and subtraction means taking apart. The kids were doing awesome with this! They can’t wait to learn more! We also have been learning about circles.

We started reading our books for our reading series! These are the one folded page books. The kids are so excited about being able to read. We read them in class and with partners, and now their homework is to read them to at least one adult at home and then a brother, sister, cat, dog... Please sign it on the back after you read it and return it to school.

We started using book boxes at school. We each have 5 books in there and can read the words, look at the pictures, or retell the story if we have heard it before. We are working on our stamina of reading quietly to ourselves. So far we are at about 5 minutes. They love this part of the day!

Isaiah can tie his shoes now! Way to go, Isaiah!

Apples, Apples, Apples

We have been learning about apples this week! We learned the life cycle of an apple, the different parts of an apple (skin, flesh, stem, leaf, seeds) and the 3 different colors an apple can be. We have done a few “easy reader’ books, too. I hope they have told you that they have homework with those books! I told them they have to read it to at least one adult at home, and then someone else, such as a brother, sister, or even your cat or dog! :)

Thursday we went to Room 100 and started a kickoff of PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports- what we use for the entire school). Each month we will be learning about a different characteristics (respect, responsibility, trustworthy…). Thursday we just learned about how to be a good friend and got to hear from high school students about how easy it is to make a person’s day, just by giving a hug, smiling, helping, etc.

Math- We have started our math series, and we even got to start using our math trays and manipulatives, and our math workbooks. The kids love getting use them! We also are learning about ‘math scenes.’ I’m sure you saw a page with 2 of everything… 2 triangles, 2 trees, 2 houses, etc).

We have been working hard trying to learn everyone's names these past 2 weeks. Oliver was the first one to do that! Way to go, Oliver!

Library- We have library on day B, but the kids can bring their book back every day if they would like and get a new one each morning.

Apples- We are going to make applesauce and apple juice next week! Please send any kind of apple(s) by Wednesday. We are asking that each child bring at least one apple, but if you have extras, we would love to have more! If you know the kind of apple, please send that, too. We will be taste testing and would like to talk about how each one has a different taste.

Don’t forget to send a snack with your child everyday!

Important Note

I'm sorry I didn't get this note sent home tonight, but we had a special get cancelled and I didn't have time to pick up my mail before the end of the day.

"A case of head lice was found in our classroom. Please check your child's hair daily. If you find lice,  apply RID or NIX to dry hair. It must remain on the head for the indicated time to be effective. Daily shampoo and conditioner are then recommended with your regular hair products. Retreatment with the lice shampoo is also needed for 5 days after the first treatment. Please remind your child not to share combs, brushes, scrunchies, hats, headphones, and anything else that touches the head."

Please contact the nurse with any questions.

The nurse checked everyone's head today and didn't find any more lice.

What a way to start the week!

When you asked your child what we did today, and they replied, "nothing," or "had recess all day," they weren't wrong! When I got to school this morning, the lights weren't working in mine or Mrs. Kelly's room next door. What they originally thought would take a half hour to fix, ended up taking the entire day (I hope just one day anyway, I left right away after school since it was dark and I had wires hanging all over my desk!)
We started our day with a recess, visited the bus to go over rules, read books and had a morning meeting in room 100, went to PE, and then our room finally had lights by 10:00! At 1:00 they asked if they could work in our room again because Mrs. Kelley's room still didn't have lights! So instead of the kids being distracted by men on ladders in our classroom, we went out for an early recess, had snack, and then played with sidewalk chalk the rest of the day! And boy am I thankful it was a beautiful day so we could go outside!
