Happy May!

Wow! This week sure flew by! I can't believe school will be out in less than a month!
We started learning about Oceans this week. We read a few books about the hermit crab and other ocean creatures, but we really focused on sharks! We learned a lot of cool facts. We learned about the biggest shark, and also the smallest! The one that dives the deepest, and the one that can live in 3 feet of water! Some like warm water, and some like cold. They also lose A LOT of teeth! We decided we would be rich if we lost as many teeth as a shark did!
Monday and Tuesday we went to watch the 7th and 8th grades perform dances they had been working on in PE. The kids loved it! They were dancing along in the audience! If your child learned a new dance move, its not from me. :)
Tuesday I had a sub so I could test the kids on their reading levels one lasts time this year. I was blown away with their improvement. Mrs. Kelley was our sub, and the kids loved having her. There were a few times we were both in the room and they loved knowing that we were sisters. :)
Tuesday was a sad day for us... it was Tulio's last day! I decided it was more important to spend a little time with the kids (and Tulio), so I didn't quite get done with reading with everyone yet.
We made a book for Tulio about what we liked doing with him, and he made a picture for us to hang in our classroom. We are hoping he is able to come back for the slide show next week!

Slideshow Time Change

Dear Families,

We realize that we’ve already sent home papers and notifications about the slideshow being at 7pm on May 11th.  It’s come to our attention that there is a band/choir concert that night and some families may have to choose… We’d like to eliminate that choice and make it so everyone can be in both places!  Please let your friends and neighbors know that the slideshow is now at 6pm on May 11th!  Thank you so much for being so forgiving!

Chicks, Chicks, Chicks!

Chick week in Kindergarten is always the most exciting, and the saddest... We started off by welcoming our first chick on Tuesday! We had a couple little pips in 2 eggs during the day on Monday, but it didn't start hatching until after school. Leah and I stayed late so we could watch him hatch! By the next morning he was ready to come out of the incubator and into the cage.  We still had another egg that had a crack in it, so we had "egg watchers" watching all day long.

 It was rain forest week, and the teachers switched kids. We made tree frogs in my class, morpho butterflies in Ms. Fenstermann's room, and toucans with Mrs. Mayne. We also made a lot of chains to help decorate the hallway! If you came for Reading Fest I am sure you felt like you were reading in the jungle!

 In math we are working on partners of 10. (8+2=10, 7+3=10...) We made "Partners of the night sky" this week.

 On Wednesday we welcomed another baby chick! We really didn't know if he was strong enough to break out of his shell since it was taking a long time, but he made it! After he was born we discovered he had a bad leg and had a little trouble getting around... but he was still cute!

On Wednesday at the end of the day the kids were telling me we had a crack in another egg. I told them it wasn't a crack, just yucky stuff  from the chicks that had hatched... but after a few other kids told me there was a crack, I decided to check myself, and there really was a crack! When we came on Thursday we had a new chick. I was shocked because I thought we were finished with chicks! Sadly this little guy wasn't doing so well. He couldn't sit up and would just lay on his back in his cage. We felt bad for him, so I had the kids hold him the whole day. At first some of the kids didn't want to hold him and only wanted the healthy one, but by the end of the day they all wanted to hold him! We learned a lot about compassion and differences this week!

 On Thursday the author Rick Crustowski came! He told us how he became an author and everything that he does to make his books! He loves to write about animals, so when he wants to research them, he sits in their habitat! He sat in a prairie watching lady bugs and birds, visited a bat sanctuary, and even swam in a pond with the frogs! We loved watching him draw and color pictures for us!

Reading Fest was Thursday night! I didn't get many pictures because I was in the teacher skit!

The chicks went home on Thursday night. The kids were so sad to see them go. (Especially Leah who held them constantly before and after school!) In their place we sent home stuffed chicks... I hope your kids enjoyed them! This is a picture Isaiah's mom sent to me on Friday.

Friday I wasn't here because I had a class in Fennimore. It sounds like the kids had fun with Mrs. Langfoss.
