"Head, thorax, abdomen, abdomen..."

It was another great week in Kindergarten! This week we learned about bugs and insects! We learned that insects have 6 legs, 3 body segments (head, thorax and abdomen), two antennae, and usually have wings.
The Kindergarten teachers each took one bug to focus on and we taught that lesson to each class. It was so much fun for me to get a chance to work with the other classes, and I’m sure it was fun for the kids, too! I taught about dragonflies. A few of the facts that we learned about dragonflies were that they can fly forward, backwards and hover like a helicopter. They have 6 legs, but can not use them to walk and they also breathe through their (remember to whisper this next word) butt. :)
Tuesday the kids went to Mrs. Otte’s room and learned about ladybugs, Wednesday they learned about fireflies with Ms. Fenstermann and on Thursday they visited Mrs. Mayne and learned about ants (They sang Head, Thorax, Abdomen to the tune of "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes")!

We made symmetrical butterflies on Thursday. We started with a folded piece of paper with only half a butterfly traced on it. By the time we finished cutting, we had a whole butterfly! Next we painted only one side, folded it back together, and when we opened it, it was a beautiful butterfly! Our butterflies will help decorate the hallway for a while!

Friday was the Homecoming Parade. We had a great time watching the parade, even though it was so cold! We wore our red and black to show our school spirit! We took a few pictures in the morning- the first pictures are of them smiling nice, but the second are of them being silly!

We read with our 4th Grade buddies again. The kids get so excited to see their “best buddies!” I took a few pictures of them today because either one of them was absent the first day I took pictures and they had a “sub” buddy for the day, or because they had matching glasses. :)

We are really working on our Read to Self stamina. We have gotten up to 8 minutes sitting quietly around the room reading to ourselves! They are using their Whisper Phones that are made out of PVC pipe. (It sure helps the room stay quiet!)The kids get so excited when they see a word they recognize, so I have the kids give a sneaky little smile instead of shouting it out to me. :)

Ms. Fenstermann is piloting a new reading series and we really like the sight words that it teaches. She has been kind enough to share her books with us, so you have probably noticed that the kids brought home a new one this week. (It is only a folded paper instead of a stapled booklet.) Please let your child read it to you, sign it and send it back. It is their choice if they want to color it. :) Here are a few pictures of us Buddy Reading our books, and Maddy reading it using the microphone on the SMART Board.

I’m sure you have noticed the paper clip and paper that is taped inside your child’s folder. When your child gets a panther paw from anyone at school, he/ she will be putting it there to take home with them. Please ask them what they did to earn it to help reinforce great behavior! It is your choice what you do with it at home!

During Halloween week in Kindergarten, we learn about Harvest and dress up like scarecrows. It is not until the end of the month, but I just wanted to give you heads up so you can be on the look out for “scarecrow” type clothes!
We will be learning about Trees next week!

Wednesday, October 8th is another early release day!
Painting with the leftover paint from playtime.
I happened to still have my camera in my pocket from buddy time, so I took some pictures of the kids at lunch today.
