This week in Kindergarten we learned about trees. Each teacher chose a tree to teach about and we passed that lesson along, so each day we had a new tree to learn about!
On Monday, we learned about the lemon tree and how they can produce 500-600 pounds of lemons each year and can produce lemons all year round! (If they are in a warm part of the world or kept indoors.) Then we go got to taste a lemon!
On Tuesday we learned about the coconut tree. The kids didn’t know that there is another shell around the coconut shell that we are all so used to seeing! We watch a video about a person climbing a coconut tree and picking them, cracking both shells and then drinking the milk! We also read the book “Tree with a Thousand Uses” and found out that people use the coconut tree for so many things! Leaves for roofs and baskets, wood for houses, food…
On Wednesday we learned about cashews. We found out that there is an “cashew apple” above where the cashew hangs and that you can eat and that you will have to use gloves to pick cashews because the part around it has oils similar to poison ivy. There are many different steps to harvest a cashew, and that is why they are more expensive than other nuts! We go to try a cashew, too!
On Thursday, we learned about maple trees! We watched a video that showed how you “tap” a tree to get out the sap and then watched them boil it to turn into syrup. It takes a lot of sap to make a small amount of syrup! For our snack we got to try pancakes and syrup! Some liked it so much that they drank the rest of the syrup!
This week we have added another sight word to our list: we. The other words we have learned are the and I.
Please remember to send back the folded books after your child has read it to you!
On Friday, we tallied leaf colors. I would draw out a colored leaf and we would add a tally mark to the right color. The kids enjoyed “slashing it” once we had a group of five! We also have been learning about “5 groups” in math. They know that if it is in a group of 5, they don’t have to count each one, they can start with 5!
We have started doing math centers this week, but have only done them once or twice since we have been so busy!
Mouse Tails- Each mouse has a number on it, and the kids have to put the correct amount of beads on its tail.
Domino Numbers- The kids count the number of dots on each domino and match it with the number on the table.0-5 Number Recognition- First, the kids have to read the color word and then color each number with a marker. I tricked them by having 6-9 in there, too. :)
Ten for Lunch- The kids had to fill in the missing number and put the numbers in order for 1-10.
High/Low Card Game- (AKA “War”) The student with the highest card wins each hand.
We have been learning about Responsibility in school this month. Everyday we talk about what being responsible looks like (sitting quietly on the carpet, getting our work done, walking in the hall, etc.) We even talked about what being responsible at home looked like! The kids had fun sharing the chores they had to do at home! At the end of the month I will be choosing one student that really stuck out to me as being responsible. So far, it looks like it so going to be a tough choice!
Last month was the word Respect. I had to choose one person that I thought showed the most respect, and I chose Kyliegh! Way to go, Kyleigh! She got a certificate and her picture posted on the wall by the office!
This year the school has a new cheer. I’m sure some have you heard your children singing it at home already! It goes:
“Panthers, Panthers, That’s who we are,
Panthers, Panthers, we’ll go far.
RESPECT everyone!
RESPECT yourself!
RESPECT the environment!
We are Panthers!
Every morning we sing a hello song, but this week I decided to trick the kids and play the Spanish version! The look on everyone’s faces was great! The kids that only speak English had no idea what they were hearing, but our two friends that speak BOTH Spanish and English had huge smiles! They helped translate the words for us and now we are trying to learn the Spanish words of our song. You may have already heard them sing “Hola amigo, Cómo está usted?...”
On Tuesday, I will be here, but I will be having a sub. I will be doing our fall part of our PALS testing. The kids did it last year in 4K, so they should be familiar with it. I am very excited to be able to work with my student one-on-one and see how smart each student actually is!
